Golf
is one of the two most popular sports in the area. Golfers are
offered five state of the art courses that not only allow them to
play, but to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the desert meeting the
ocean ~ a quiet unique combination that makes "Los Cabos" an
unforgettable place which only tempts travelers to come back year
after year.
There
are three Jack Nicklaus designed courses, one Robert Trent Jones II
and lastly a Roy & Pete Dye signature club. The best time to
play is in the morning, however, if you are an amateur the
afternoons are much better as there are fewer players and more time
to practice. The Concierge desk at Las Ventanas is here to assist
with bookings. Please be flexible as courses tend to fill up, and
from time to time some switching around has to be done in order to
have you enjoy your "Golf" vacation.
Cabo Real Golf
Course Within the boundaries of this huge ocean-front
resort development, nestled among hotels Meliá Cabo Real, Las
Ventanas al Paraiso Resort, Casa del Mar and Meliá Los Cabos, lies
the magnificent Robert Trent Jones II Championship golf course. The
site of the 1999 PGA Senior Slam Tournament, the course is a classic
design laid over more than 7,000 yards of verdant landscape with
three ocean-front holes. "Low handicap golfers will find the sand
traps and obstacles somewhat difficult, but playable by the less
experienced," says Luis Ituarte, the Golf Pro at Cabo Real. A
picturesque and diverse course, Cabo Real features rolling fairways
with strategically placed bunkers on narrow terrain that work their
way up to the 6th tee 460 feet above sea level. The first six holes
are in mountainous terrain, with hills and valleys stretching into
the surrounding Sierras; others are nestled near the beach.
Luis Ituarte is the Head PGA Pro. Par 72. Lessons available.
"Ocean Course" at Cabo Del
Sol The crown
jewel of the golf developments in Los Cabos is Cabo del Sol, with
the Jack Nicklaus Signature Ocean Course, part of a planned complex
of three. Nicklaus says Cabo Del Sol has "the three best ocean
finishing holes in the world." The course is situated on the beach
at Playa Barco Varado. Guests of the 1,800 acre development have
about a mile of beach to play on. Some say that Cabo del Sol is
destined to become one of the premier golf resort communities in the
world. Instruction and rentals are available. The par 72 course
front nine is 3,597 yards, with the back nine 3,440 yards. Brad
Wheatley is the Head PGA Pro.
Palmilla Jack
Nicklaus was brought in around 1990 to design the first signature
course in Los Cabos; featuring the front "Arroyo Nine" and back
"Mountain Nine." Nicklaus described the design as "… designing
desert mountains by the sea." Golfers are given spectacular views of
the Sea of Cortez from nearly every hole. Green fees include cart,
bottled water and use of the driving range. The par 72, Palmilla
course "Mountain Nine" is 3,602 yards; the "Arroyo Nine" is 3,337
yards. Robert Gaudet is the Palmilla course resident PGA Pro.
Rentals and instruction are available.
Cabo San Lucas Country
Club Commanding a
sweeping view of Land's End and the Sea of Cortez stands the Cabo
San Lucas Country Club. The design features Dye's characteristic
waste bunkers. The par 5,607 yard 7th hole is regarded as the most
challenging, where a large lake makes it tough for all but the pros.
As for bunkers, Dye said, "At GPA West they're all transition
bunkers. If your ball goes into the desert, it's not difficult to
fine." The Golf Academy at Cabo San Lucas Country Club offers
programs for players of all skill levels. The par 72 course is 3,651
yards on the front nine; the back nine is 3,569 yards. Steve Dodson
is the Director of Golf.
El Dorado Golf
Course Los Cabos latest course is the Jack Nicklaus
designed El Dorado, newly completed in June of 1999. This oceanfront
Championship course is set primarily in the Arroyo near the Westin
Regina Hotel at the northeast end of the Cabo Real development, and
extends on both sides of the Transpeninsular Highway. The 18-hole
course has five holes adjacent to the ocean and four lakes. Length
7,050. Par 72. Practice facilities available. Luis Ituarte is the El
Dorado course resident PGA Pro. |
